And the winners are …..
Katikati Open-Air Art hosts the NZ Mural and Arts Festival held every second year. They started in 2006 and the festival is a weeklong celebration of the arts and especially the murals , which Katikati has become famous for.
The main foucs of the event is the six mural artists who have been selected to compete for the “June Carlton Memorial Trophy” and the sizable prizemoney that goes with it. The artists are required to paint their approved submission on a prepared board over a five day period. Each festival has a particular theme to it and the artists have to interpret that theme in their own way and style.
This years winner was Shane Walker, from Waihi Beach, with his interpretation of the theme Nga Taonga O Aotearoa – the natural treasures of NZ.
Other winners were J Muzaca, Texas, as runner up.
Kerry Nicholson, Queensland, who won the Spirit of the Festival.
Also part of every festival is the sculpture competition, based on the theme “birdwalk” the winning sculpture was the “Kiwi” by Sam Dunlop.
We are looking forward to Festival 2017!
